BIRYANI – A FAMOUS INDIAN DISH THAT DIDN’T COME FROM INDIA

People are still uncertain about the origin of Biryani, but one thing is for sure, our favorite Indian fried rice didn’t actually come from India.

So where did it come from? Many agreed that it most certainly came from Iran, which was afterwards brought to India during the reign of the Mughals. The name ‘Biryani’ most clearly shows the reason – it can be traced to the original Persian word ‘Birinj Biriyan’ – or fried rice.

Despite its origin, the dish didn’t actually flourish and evolve until Indians turned it into a flavorful, delicious meal as it is today.

The most important ingredient that makes the soul of Biryani is Basmati rice – gift of mother nature specially bestowed on India. Additionally, the use of other ingredients which vary according to each region brought Biryani to a different level, and became one of the must-try dishes of Indian cuisine.

The main ingredients can be egg, chicken, mutton, prawn, paneer, mushroom, vegetables or it can even be plain. Spices can be as plentiful as it can be, including ghee, nutmeg, mace, pepper, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, bay leaves, coriander, mint leaves, ginger, onions, tomatoes, green chilies, garlic, etc.
